It can be both.

If you watched my story today you saw that I have been grappling about how to “show up” in the motherhood space. Do I show up as a mom that has her s*%t together and loves every moment and tells you that you have to do it because it is the best thing you will ever do? Or do I show up as a mom that complains and is constantly falling apart just “trying to make it through the day”?

As I was walking on the beach today I was feeling so calm and peaceful. I thought about how the ocean can be such a sanctuary. BUT THEN I thought about how literally a week ago, the ocean had a “rogue wave” (which was a borderline tsunami) that completely destroyed parts of towns, structures, and even injured and killed several people. The same entity that creates such calm and clarity for people can also be insanely destructive. IT CAN BE BOTH.

Not only can it be both, it IS both. And the fact that motherhood is incredibly life-changing and wonderful, but will rock you to your core is what makes it such a beautiful dichotomy. We live in a world that is so polarized and it feels like we have to “pick a side” for everything. But the reality is that there is a lot of grey area in all aspects of life. And if we can dabble in the grey and accept that there is truth to both sides of pretty much anything, we can be able to connect more with each other and come to a mutual understanding.

As a mom I can often feel that society has tossed me aside into an “unimportant” category, but I know deep down that we are doing THE MOST important work that there is. So I will continue to share both sides. The amazing and unreal highs, and the lowest lows because I think that people need to see both. New moms need to know that yes, it is so freaking hard, but mixed in with the freaking hard is the deepest love you ever felt. A love that gets down into your bones that you never knew could exist.

So if you’re still reading, and you are a mom. Thank you for being here and supporting me. You are doing the hardest and most important work in our society. I value you and you are doing an incredible job.
