How to prepare for a Newborn Session
Let’s be real here. The first few weeks (or years) after your new babe arrives are stressful. No sleep, your body is completely different, and your house is a mess. I GET all of that because I have been there. Do you know how many moms apologize to me for the state of their house?! Stop that! You just made an entire human, give yourself some grace.
I want you to LOVE your newborn photos so here are a few tips to ensure that you have photos you can cherish forever.
Wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable and confident (as confident as you can feel after giving birth) I absolutely realize this is a tall order, but I have had many moms in retrospect say things like “I wish my stomach was smaller” or “My arms look so big” which breaks my heart. If you’re insecure about a certain body part, make sure to cover that up. Not because I think anything is wrong with you as you are, but because you will look at your photos differently if you hate your arms and you’re wearing a tank top.
Do NOT stress about the baby or state of the house. If you choose to work with me I will spend the majority of the time in your room that has the most natural light. That is the only room you need to make sure that whatever is out in the room, you’re ok with getting photographed. If the baby cries, we can take a break. If the baby is fussy, mom can hold him/her. The baby is running the show with me.
Manage siblings. I love siblings and get lots of photos with them, but they can be a distraction for the baby and mom. I ask that once sibling photos are done that dad or someone else in the home can entertain siblings so we can get the best possible photos.
Keep baby awake an hour before the session and feed baby right before I arrive. This ensures that baby is ready to sleep (if they don’t that is ok too!)
I recommend getting newborn photos done from 0-10 days of birth, but I am open to doing them at any age. I get that life gets tricky, but the sooner you get those newborn photos, the more likely you are to get the cute sleeping pictures (my personal fave).
Newborn photoshoots are my absolute favorite and I hope that you and your family can cherish them forever! Make sure to follow these tips for the best overall experience!
