The challenge of newborn photos and how to avoid it
I have done a lot of newborn sessions by now and most of them have one thing in common: stressed out moms that don’t feel comfortable in their skin. Why? Well considering you just carried a baby around in your body for 10 months along with several liters of extra fluid and hormones coming out the wazoo, it is going to take a while (2 years with my daughter) to feel like yourself again. It is not for the faint of heart.
Now when you feel this way it can be quite challenging to love the photos of you during this time. You can feel, just…off! So when I notice that newborn moms are overly apologetic or seemingly uncomfortable, we stop and breathe. We talk about the birth, let the baby nurse or bottle feed, we take a break! I don’t rush the photoshoot to get out of there because newborn babies are on their own timelines and I am here for it.
As for moms that don’t like pictures of themselves after the baby is born here are a few tips:
Wear the most comfortable dress or outfit you can find. Comfortable can still be cute! A flowy dress or something that is not form-fitting can work wonders.
GIVE YOURSELF GRACE DAMNIT! (writing that word out felt weird) remind yourself that you just brought life into this world! You’re a damn rockstar and not one soul expects you to have a perfect anything after that
A lot of my newborn photos focus on the baby and I make sure to get photos that are flattering for a new mom!
Understand that these photos are not for right now. Of course you want to show off your adorable new bundle, but these photos will be such amazing memories as time goes on, which it does so quickly. If it is your first baby, TRUST ME, this will fly by and you’ll miss the newborn scrunch, their tiny hands, and sleeping face so get it while that baby is fresh!
